What is the use of AI in ADAS?

What are the technologies ADAS uses?

Sensors are required in a vehicle to replace or complement the driver’s senses. The human eyes are the primary sensor we use when driving, but the stereoscopic images they offer must be processed in our brains to determine relative distance and vectors in three dimensions.

  • RADAR: Radio Detection and Ranging, the RADAR sensors are used in ADAS vehicles to detect objects in front of the vehicle. RADAR is one of the numerous sensor systems used in ADAS for collision avoidance, identification of pedestrians and cyclists, and supplementing vision-based camera-sensing systems.
  • Because RADAR signals can travel up to 300 metres in front of the car, they are very useful when driving at high speeds. Because of their high frequencies, they can detect other vehicles and obstructions very quickly. RADAR can also “see” through bad weather and other visibility occlusions. Because their wavelengths are only a few millimetres long, they can detect objects as large as several centimetres.
  • LiDAR: Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a system that is used to detect objects and map their distances in real-time. At the core, LiDAR is a type of RADAR that uses lasers as its source. One thing to note here is, that the lasers used in LiDAR are the same as the ones used in the grocery
    stores. The more high-end LiDAR sensors rotate and emit these “eye-safe” lasers in all directions. The LiDAR sensors can be equipped with 128 lasers inside. The more layers, the better, because it helps in creating an accurate 3D point cloud.
  • V2X: Vehicle to Everything (V2X) is an important part of ADAS. This communication refers to the communication between a vehicle and any entity that can affect or is affected by the vehicle. It is a vehicular communication system that integrates more specialised types of communication such as V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure), V2N (vehicle-to-network), V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle), V2P (vehicle-to-pedestrian), and V2D (vehicle-to-driving) (vehicle-to-device).
  • GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite system is a high-precision navigation system vehicles use to make self-driving cars a reality. This technology is way ahead of what we now know as “GPS”. Consumer (non-military) GNSS has a positional accuracy of roughly one metre. This is sufficient for a common navigation system in a human-driven car. However, for true autonomy, centimetre-level accuracy is required.
  • Camera: Multiple cameras looking in different directions can be seen in today’s ADAS automobiles. Their outputs are now used to develop a three-dimensional representation of the vehicle’s surroundings within the ADAS computer system, rather than only for backup safety. Cameras are used for different purposes, including traffic sign recognition, reading lines and other road markings, recognising pedestrians and obstacles, and much more. They can also be used for security, rain detection, and other convenience applications.
